Mike's Green Garden mini-farm

Hey Green Future Growers here’s a Summer Update!

Jackie Marie Beyer here to say HaPpY Summer! Just checking in! Making sure your aware of all the exciting things going on!

We’re just about to break 350k downloads of the show! We just passed 345,775 downloads this morning!

I just can’t believe it, excited I know what wonderful listeners and audience you are. It makes me so happy to share the great guests we’ve had on. I’m trying super hard to get caught up. I’m trying to get some interviews done so we don’t have any lapses this fall like we did this spring.

Organic Gardening Podcast Group

We’d love if you’d join  Organic Gardener Podcast Facebook Community!

I’m trying to spend more time there, I’m trying to connect with everyone there so if I haven’t reached out to you sorry, I’m trying. We’d love to see you connect there. I went to the Bozeman Farmer’s Market this summer when I was there for a teacher training. I’ve met some farmers who have already come on and done some great interviews or scheduled.

Mini Farm Lesson Learned

IMG_1880.JPG

Mike’s been building the mini-farm and one of the big lessons I feel like I learned this year that Mike and I go back and forth on all the time is. So he has a sad face, “oh the broccoli would be so great right now!”, or “Oh the peppers!” but to me it’s so much better that it happened then because if it happened now it would be a giant loss! I mean yes we probably lost all of the broccoli and a lot of the peppers but we might not get a broccoli crop because it’s already been down to 38º! And it’s July 20th so who knows what will happen.

Going To The Sun Road

Step outside your comfort zone

Last week it was super hot all 98º in the day, hot all night long and now it’s so cold you can hardly keep the windows open all night long. But Montana is beautiful this summer. One of the amazing things I did this summer was I drove over Going-To-The-Sun Road in Glacier National Park! IDK if I ever mentioned that I am totally afraid of heights and so I have been building up my confidence by riding the shuttle.

Mike and I have been in the woods. Picking huckleberries and being together.

Keeping the garden going, I feel like it’s constantly water water water. Water the mini-farm, water the orchard, water the garden. I feel like the water runs somewhere in the shade almost all day except for a few hours in the afternoon.

I’ve been harvesting a lot of swiss chard. I like to use swiss chard just about anywhere you would use spinach.

I’ve been posting a lot of pics on Facebook about beet greens because they just last longer in the garden, my spinach bolted right away. I just blanch the swiss chard or beet greens and freeze them. Then I have garden veggies to put in pasta or on pizza or in eggs on the weekends for brunch all winter long and it’s nice cause it’s already cooked just throw it in!

So, a couple of things to mention.

At the end of June I finally posted the interview I did with Kirstin Ohlson who wrote the

The Soil Will Save Us: How Scientists, Farmers, and Foodies Are Healing the Soil to Save the Planet

The Soil Will Save Us: How Scientists, Farmers, and Foodies Are Healing the Soil to Save the Planet

which Patti Armbrister has mentioned so many times and we are giving away a copy of her book. If you’d like to win, just enter a comment on her show notes page and you can enter. I’m going to announce the winner on my Birthday July 31st!

Somebody had asked me about cooking so I replayed the interviews I did about cooking with my friend Marisa! But if anyone wanted to talk about cooking what you got in your CSA, or at your farmer’s market or what’s growing in your garden I’d love to do a Friday episode about cooking!

The other great thing is I teamed up with audible and now you can get a free audiobook from them by going to www.organicgardenerpodcast.com/book or just type book into the search bar at www.organicgardenerpodcast.com. And you can enter to get listening to your first audio book today! Kirsten’s book is there as well as some other great books that have been recommended on the Organic Gardener Podcast!

I’d love to hear what you’re reading this summer. I stumbled upon a series of books about the desert in the middle east of all things. My cousin wrote a book called the Gifts of Man, my students handed me a book that’s a very similar story and went really well with the Gifts of Man called Alphabet of Dreams. Both books are stories about the 3 wise men who brought gifts to baby Jesus!

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

 The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

And then on audible I’m listening to the Alchemist. Now I know none of these are gardening books but the Alchemist has been recommended on Entrepreneur On Fire. IDK how many times and I think that you might be interested because it’s all about following your passion, living the life you were meant to lead, creating your legacy, paying attention to omens and most of all reaching for your dreams.

Dreams Do Come True

Many of you know I am an aspiring artist and children’s book illustrator. One of the books I have bene working on for like 19 years now is called Dreams Do Come True and it’s a fill in the blank journal with water color paintings I have done about the life you want to lead. Pages include what will my husband be like, how many kids do I want to have, what pets, what will grow in my garden, what careers do I want to try, what things do I want to learn. Anyway, I feel very passionate about making people’s dreams come true, I am always trying to inspire my students to be what they want to be, to try things and go after their biggest goals.
